The quality of our term 3 exhibitions has been most impressive with the improvement very much noticeable. To have our family’s onsite and participating in this key part of our learning design has also been a significant positive.
We are very lucky at Launceston Big Picture, with our staff frequently going above and beyond to provide our students with options but what is equally as pleasing is the level of enthusiasm and gratitude displayed by participants. Seeing students genuinely appreciative of the opportunities they are presented with is a strong part of the culture within our school community. I was so impressed to see the work of our student writers who recently participated in the Tamar Tales, “Write a book in a day” project. To write and illustrate a book in one long day is an outstanding achievement. Well done Fenix, Brayden, Annabelle, and Genevieve. Thank you to Marianne and Tanya for supporting this new iniative.
It is also extremely pleasing to see our young people prepared to step up and lead activities within our school community.
World’s Greatest Shave
Bridie Dwyer from Jen’s year 9 advisory recently decided to say goodbye to her hair to help raise money towards the fight for cancer. Bridie said, “I am doing this for my Mum and all the people who have been affected by cancer”. Bridie raised over $500- an amazing achievement!
Canteen
Ally Pryke has also been involved in the fight against cancer. She led one of our recent Town Hall sessions and was able to build the knowledge and understanding of our students with regard to cancer. She not only raised the awareness of our school community but also much needed funds to support the fight against cancer. I do know that Ally has more initiatives planned for term 4.
RUOK Day
Our very talented senior students from Nick’s advisory class, recently coordinated and lead activities that were designed to create awareness around some of the issues associated with mental health. Our students and staff had loads of fun participating in various challenges, with some cool prizes won!
It must be noted that the key messages of this day were to:
-ask r u ok?
-listen to others
-encourage people to commit to something
-and the importance of checking in on your friends.
We have also finalised our key end of year events. Please see details below:
Presentation Awards Evening: Tuesday December 14th, 5:30 - 6:30pm
This year our celebration event is again being held at the Boathouse, 55a Lindsay Street. Individual students will be recognised with special and prestigious awards and we will also farewell and congratulate our year 12 graduates.
Unfortunately for 2021, we can once again only have a limited number of people attend this event. Award winners and year 12 graduates will be able to have one family member in attendance (special circumstances will be considered). We will be sending invitations to families in November. Those attending will need to RSVP to their invitation. We thank people for their understanding.
Celebration Dinner: Tuesday December 14th, 6:30 - 8:30pm
Our Celebration dinner will commence at 6:30pm at the Boathouse. Invited grade 9-12 students will receive their invitations in November. Students will need to be collected from the front of the Boathouse at 8:30pm.

New Enrolments For 2022
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from students who would like to join our school in 2022. The Big Picture Learning Design requires students to actively engage in planning and participating in their own academically rigorous and personalised learning program. Some of the key criteria are:
- Students with strong attendance and work ethic, but may not perform at their best in exam situations.
- Students who are self-motivated and can work in a highly personalised way
- Students who have the confidence to participate in a Learning Through Internship (up to 30 days per year or 180 hours)
We will be hosting an Information Evening on Wednesday 10th November for interested families. This will be at our school, 4 Invermay Rd Inveresk, commencing at 5:00pm. Families wishing to attend should RSVP by contacting our school office on 63 351500 or by emailing Marianne Olsen- marianne.olsen@education.gov.tas.au.
Following expressions of interest students will be invited to participate in a transition program designed to give students a deeper understanding of the Big Picture Design including Advisory, Learning Goals, Learning through Internship and Exhibitions.
We also have limited places in Grades 10, 11 & 12 for 2022; interested students should RSVP to attend the Family Information Evening.
If you have any questions or require further clarification, please contact Marianne Olsen at school.
Finally, I would like to wish all members of our school community a safe and happy holiday break.

2. LEARNING THROUGH INTERNSHIP
Learning Through Internship
During Term 3, 15 students participated in a two day White Card training course.
This course was offered as one of the trade industry days by Masterbuilders Tas.
By students completing their White Card they are eligible to be on a construction site, with many businesses using the qualification to ensure students have an understanding of work place safety.
If your young person did complete the White Card training a certificate was issued to them. Students need to go into service Tasmania with forms of identification to have the certificate transferred over to a formal White Card.
Blake who achieved his White Card training did a one week Internship at Fairbrother. Blake worked from 7:30am – 4:00pm on the Inveresk UTas site, by working alongside experienced people in the construction industry, Blake learnt real knowledge and understanding of every day work skills required for the industry. Thank you to Fair Brothers for supporting our LTI program.

We want your help for our Learning Through Internship Program!
If you are a local business and have opportunities for students to engage in your industry during these uncertain times, please contact Mel at melanie.van.asperen@education.tas.gov.au

Tamar Tales
On Friday, 3rd September, four students participated in the Queechy Alliance’s Tamar Tales at Newstead College.
Students worked together to write and illustrate a book in a day.
They were given parameters on the morning and had time to plan the storyline and characters. This was done collaboratively and while one student began writing the story, the others began creating illustrations.
At the end of the day "The Dragon, the Mill and the Ring" was produced and students have a bound copy that they shared at their exhibition.

My Book Binding and Paper Making Project
My project this term was on bookbinding and papermaking.
I picked bookbinding as it was an interest of mine that I have had for a while and wanted to look into further and I looked into papermaking as it was recommended to me so I could work on having a lower environmental impact when making my books.
I am really proud of how the products came out and I look forward to doing more in the future.

Personalising Learning Plans
This term we have changed the way we use Learning Plans with the aim to make them more personal and meaningful.
Students designed what they want their Learning Plan document to look like and the document evolved during the term as students added to it from time to time to record the learning and growth.
During exhibitions students have been able to explain their Learning Plans and use it to describe the Big Picture Learning Goals and give examples of how their experiences have provided broad learning across the goals.
Here are some examples of the diverse ways students have chosen to record their growth this term.

Term 3 - Coming to an End
It’s nearing the end of term 3 and many students at Launceston Big Picture School have had, or are preparing for, their exhibitions – Two grade 9 students, Amber and Bridie D are already working on their mouth-watering End of Term Reflective Tasks. They are getting their hands dirty with some cake batter and icing.
Normally written End of Term Tasks is the go-to, but Amber and many students are changing that up and doing something out of their comfort zones to reflect on their challenges, achievements and future focus.
Bridie, who is in the kitchen most Fridays for active learning, is turning that interest to her reflection task, with vanilla and chocolate cupcakes along with a marble cake. Her plan is to make fondant objects reflecting how this term went (challenges, and achievements), and how she wants next term to look like (future focus) and put them on her cakes.
The two students started with making the cakes and getting that over and done with ready for next day to ice when it’s not that busy with exhibitions. Excluding the part where they were worried that the marble cake wouldn’t be ready in time as the batter inside was still gooey whenever they checked, it was a pretty successful day for them.
Icing day went smoothly, apart from the need to fix Bridie’s icing that she made a mistake with and having to go out of the building to get more butter. The girls were able to successfully transfer the icing to a piping bag and make nice little swirls on their cupcakes.
Amber made four cupcakes, here is her reason behind the fondant shapes: The music note reflects upon Amber’s achievements in her personal interest project and active learning groups, the little person is a symbol from Youngtown Primary School logo and represents some challenges Amber faced seeking an LTI this term, although she has enjoyed shadow days with a teacher at YPS late in the term. Finally the question mark indicates that Amber is still considering her direction for Term 4 and the next few weeks will explore interest areas and LTI ideas.
With little icing left from the cupcakes, Bridie had to make another batch for her marble cake and dazzled it up with some sprinkles in the icing. Here is Bridies reasoning behind her fondant shapes: Bridie’s personal interest project was about dog grooming and the little paw prints represent her achievements in that area. The camera represents Bridie’s future ideas to explore animal photographs in term 4, which ties in her interest in animal behaviours. The large marble cake was chosen to represent challenges in the term with regard to LTI where Bridie persistently sought community connections related to dog grooming and came across many barriers to doing shadow days in this area but remained positive and is beginning to see the richness of her challenging experiences.

The World's Greatest Shave
Monday the 20th of September saw Bridie Dwyer from Jen’s Advisory be brave and shave for the Leukemia Foundations ‘World’s Greatest Shave’.
Bridie’s shave has raised $1,250 for the Leukemia Foundation, which will provide over two weeks worth of accommodation for families who are forced to relocate to seek treatment for blood cancer.
We would like to thank all of those who donated to Bridie’s shave, and to Adrian Stabb who kindly provided his skills as a hairdresser for the event.
We are very proud of Bridie’s effort and look forward to her sporting various beanies until the weather warms up!

R U Ok? Day
R U OK? is a harm prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times in their lives.
Their work focuses on building the motivation, confidence and skills of the Help-Giver – the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life.
R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention efforts by encouraging people to invest more time in their personal relationships and by building the capacity of informal support networks – friends, family and colleagues - to be alert to those around them, have a conversation if they identify signs of distress or difficulty and connect someone to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis.
On Friday the 10th of September the students of Nick’s year 11 Advisory ran an afternoon of fun activities with relation to improving or maintaining our mental health.
We aimed to promote the ‘R U OK?’ organizations suicide prevention message and in doing so, bring awareness to mental health issues.
During our special R U OK? themed Town Hall students were able to have a go at making smoothies using the smoothie bike. The blender blends ingredients by pedaling a stationary bike. This was to promote physical exercise as well as a healthy diet.

The activities available to students on the day were:
- Biscuit Decoration – Decorate some sweet treats with colored icings and various confectionaries.
- Barbecue – Cook some juicy steaks, corn, marshmallows and other tasty foods on a portable fire pit set up out front of the school.
- Silent Activities/Meditation – Engage in some silent reading or meditation exercises and relax. Or be enthralled in the especially popular diamond paintings.
- Sport – Go for a quick run to Riverbend Park and fuel your exercise with competitive team-based sports.
Overall, the event was a huge success. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed themselves which is exactly the kind of headspace we want to encourage.

End Of Term 3 Games Afternoon
My name is Josh Steer and I am one of the student leaders at school. Our group of student leaders were keen to have some fun at the end of term and celebrate what has been a busy but very enjoyable term.
We all loved the idea of having a games afternoon and spent time planning “points based” challenges that involved all advisories having representatives. Our challenge activities included, mario kart, Minecraft, basketball, just dance and old fashion Board Games.
It was a competition between advisories and the winners were:
- 1st – Dan’s Advisory
- 2nd – Nick’s Advisory
- 3rd – Jen’s Advisory

Teacher Aide Appreciation Week
Monday August 30th - Friday September 3rd was Teacher Aide Appreciation Week!
We are so lucky at LBPS to have such wonderful teacher assistants.
Thank you for everything you do Jacqui, Tracey, Mia and Adrian! You are all stars!
Bob's Bikes For Sale!
Our school is very proud of our Bob’s Bikes program!!
Students who have an interest in working with bikes work with our coordinator, Bob Blackman, one afternoon a week to renovate the bikes. This renovation work achieves two main objectives: to involve students in a community project which is designed to benefit other people or causes; and to learn practical and technical skills associated with bike care and maintenance. Some of the bikes are sold directly from the school but the majority of the bikes are sold on Gumtree.
The program continues to have a partnership with Tasmania Police in Launceston who regularly supply and donate unclaimed bikes in their possession. Donations of bikes are also received from members of the local community who have become aware of and want to support the program.
Recently Shirley Blackman (Bob’s wife and financial manager of the program) transferred an amount of $3,100.00 on behalf of the school into Australia for UNHCR's NAB bank account.
Of the $3100.00, we have asked to donate $2,500 to your Afghanistan emergency appeal; and $500.00 to the ongoing emergency appeal for the the crisis in Yemen.
As a school we are very much in appreciation of the work of Bob and Shirley Blackman – our students gain so much from this project and we can also assist such worthwhile causes.

COVID Quick Check-In TAS
To comply with Public Health Directions, our school is now set up with the COVID Check In TAS App. This app enables visitors to our school to register their visit using the self-check-in QR code and have their information directly stored with the Tasmanian Department of Health for contact tracing (if required).
Use of the app will help the Tasmanian contact tracing team quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Big Picture Education has 12 distinguishers.
In our newsletter we will share them.
Our eighth is...
8. Everyone's a Leader in Big Picture schools, leadership is shared among the Principal, staff, students, family and comunity partners. Opportunities for leadership are created for everyone.
Informing School of Student Absences
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answer phone.
School Uniform
It is compulsory for students to wear their school uniform when attending school excursions, interviews, LTIs or if they are representing the school at events.
Uniforms can be purchased from the school office and are sold at cost price:
- Polo Shirts with school logo = $30
- School Hoody with school logo = $65
Any pre-worn uniform donations would be very much appreciated and are used in our emergency uniform/clothing pool.
Parking Inveresk Precinct
It is highly recommended that parents and visitors to the school DO NOT PARK along the nature strip in front of the school, slong the footpath or on the grass area beside Aurora Stadium.
The City Council have recently approached the school and have advised these areas are being patrolled and infringements are being issued.
Parents and visitors are advised to use the paid parking facilities at the Inveresk Car Park (next to Blue Cafe).
Communication & Useful Links
