Recently our year 10 students with an interest in art and design went to Hobart to explore Mona. Students were inspired by the innovating, amazing work on display and I could see the excitement of the faces of participants on their return to school. We have some very talented artists and I look forward to continuing to see our young people continue to explore their creative interests.
During book week many of our students visited the town library and Petrarch’s bookshop to explore and purchase new reading material for our school. This year every advisory class was allocated $300 from our school literacy budget to spend on new books or magazines. Students enjoyed the chance to personalise their reading material. I know that many were continuously asking Claire if their purchases were covered and available to read yet!! We are now exploring new ways of sharing reading material in our school, with staff and students recently participating in workshops aimed at establishing where and how best to display our books and magazines. Encouraging our young people to read for learning and enjoyment is one of our school’s key priorities.
Ensuring that our young people have a plan for when they leave our school is a very important part of our learning design. Throughput year 11 and 12, our students regularly research and investigate further educational options. Many recently visited the University of Tasmania’s Hobart campus and were left very much inspired and with a belief that further tertiary study is a possibility for all.
Our school band, Now We’re Apart, will soon compete in the Tasmanian Rock Challenge, with members Phoebe Kelbassa, Luke Shirley, Justyne Westwood, Jarrod Smith and Elkie Kershaw spending many hours preparing. They also recently played their first professional gig in town. Phoebe will also compete in the solo section of the Challenge. Our entire school community is very proud of our band and we wish them well in the Rock Challenge.
We have also had a strong focus on assisting and encouraging our students to find Learning Through Internship (LTI) placements. Learning opportunities are everywhere, not just inside classrooms. When we have a passion for what we are doing, knowledge unfolds and evolves naturally. Learning Through Internship means working 1-2 days a week in an area of your interest. Students work with a mentor- an adult with a similar interest and develop a project that will benefit the workplace and their learning at school. Internships are used to build knowledge, understanding and skills through authentic work. Leaving our school to learn is a key part of being a Big Picture student and it has been really pleasing to see that the number of students actively involved in a placement. I regularly receive positive feedback in regard to the work habits and skills that our young people display whilst on Internship.
Queechy Alliance Networks Involvement
Our school is very fortunate to work with other schools as part of networks. We regularly work with Hobart Big Picture, Sorell and Kingston High Schools as part of our Tasmanian Big Picture network. We are also very fortunate to work with Newstead College, Queechy, Waverley, Punchbowl, Norwood, St Leonards and Ravenswood primary schools on various initiatives as part of our involvement in the Queechy Alliance network of schools. Shortly interested students will have the option to participate in Tamar Tales: a Queechy Alliance initiative, that will be happening at Newstead College. Teams of budding writers from across the Alliance will meet for a full day at Newstead to craft a “book in a day”. These events are always challenging but very rewarding for students involved. Teams will work together to design a book based on a brief they will be given. Writing, editing and illustrating are all important parts of this engaging challenge. Thank you to Marianne Olsen and Bob Blackman for their work in preparing our team for this event. Keep an eye out in our next newsletter for updates from this event.
Information Evening
This term we have enjoyed being able to welcome families and visitors into our school. Recently we held the first of our annual information sessions for students and families new to our school, those looking for a potential enrolment in 2022. Our current students shared their LBPS learning stories and answered questions from an enthusiastic audience. Nearly 40 students recently completed our 5 day transition program. The program is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the Big Picture Design including Advisory, Learning Goals, Learning through Internship and Exhibitions. Some of the key criteria we look for are:
- Students with strong attendance and work ethic but may not perform at their best in exam situations.
- Students who are self-motivated and can work in a highly personalised way
- Students who have the confidence to participate in a Learning Through Internship (up to 30 days per year or 180 hours)
Thank you to Marianne Olsen and Tanya Ringuet for their dedicated work in planning and coordinating our transition programs.
Congratulations
Ensuring that all of our year 12 students have a positive pathway plan for when they leave our school is an important part of our philosophy and the Big Picture Learning design. I would like to congratulate Brad Lewis and Georgia Hall. Brad recently secured full time employment with Freshline and Georgia, a traineeship at Cataract on Patterson. Congratulations Brad and Georgia.

2. LEARNING THROUGH INTERNSHIP
Tasmanian Hospitality Association Showcase
Tasmanian Hospitality Association (THA) held a hospitality showcase at UTas Stadium on Wednesday 18th August.
This event provided hands on practical tasks where students rotated through a series of workshops including bar and barista skills and kitchen operations.
Learning from industry experts, students began by working in a bar making two mocktails - a tropical sunrise and a watermelon cooler. Students then moved onto kitchen operations working with a highly skilled chef, Kate, who taught them how to make a perfect omelette.
From learning about back of house in hospitality to working in front of house students practiced serving drinks by balancing drinks on a tray.
The last workshop on becoming a good barista provided some foundation knowledge and how to do latte art.
All students had the opportunity to taste test their work which was a rewarding experience.
Thank you to THA for organising a real-life learning workshop in a fantastic venue at Utas Stadium.

We want your help for our Learning Through Internship Program!

SpongeBob The Musical
On Wednesday the 11th August a group of Big Picture Students went along to see the Australian Premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Musical. Performed by Stage Right Youth Theatre company, under the direction of Danny Gibson.
The musical featured songs by Aerosmith, The Flaming Lips, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! at the Disco and Davis Bowie among others.
This theatrical performance, based on the quirky cartoon, was entertaining on all fronts with an awesome cast starring our own Harry Radbone as Squidward.
"Harry made a great Squidward, fitting the role to a T" said Phoebe Kelbassa.
Kristin Van Wyk also mentioned "Mr Crab kept in character well and that Plankton was small yet mighty!"
Lily Dias was also very impressed with the sets and costumes "The Jelly Fish umbrellas were amazing, I loved them!"
Congratulations to all involved in the production, it was so great to be able to watch some live theatre again.

Celebrating Science Week
Balloon Car Challenge
To celebrate National Science Week Grade 9 and 10 students conducted the Balloon Car Challenge. In groups of 4 or 5, students were tasked with building a vehicle that was propelled by the power of one balloon. The challenge was to make the vehicle that travelled the longest distance in a straight line.
Each team received 1 x balloon, 3 x straws and 2 x skewers, with the rest of the vehicle having to be made out of recycled products.
Many interesting designs were presented on the day, vehicles with 3 wheels, 4 wheels and even one with no wheels.
It was a gruelling session of competition, where groups had 3 attempts to get their vehicles to travel as far as possible, with time to make necessary adjustments between attempts.
We had designs of all shapes and sizes that traveled straight, left, right, spun around and one that went backwards. But when the dust settled Fenix, Brayden, Lucas, Justin and Orlando prevailed with an impressive distance of 4.5m.
Overall it was a great collabortive challenge that enabled students to use a range of skills and knowledge to achieve a common goal. Well done to all students and teams that participated, much fun and learning was had by all.

"Now We're Apart" Records @ TAFE
On the 4th and 6th of August a school band ‘Now We’re Apart’ had the opportunity to go to TAFE at Alanvale to record an original song.
We arrived on the Wednesday and were met by Brandon who teaches the Music and Sound Production course. He introduced the band to his students who were recording the song for one of their projects.
The TAFE students had everything set up ready to go and the band were able to play through the song several times to settle in to the space and get the sound right.
The song ‘Make it Right’ was recorded on the Wednesday and then an initial mix was done on the Friday.
Our students got to experience recording in a studio and they were able to see the process of mixing their multitrack recording.
A big thankyou goes out to Brandon and his students for their time and allowing us to record with them.

Victorian era Wallpaper
There has been some excellent Personal Interest Project work in Jen’s Advisory in Term 3 that goes deeply into interest areas to answer essential inquiry questions and include broad learning. Jessie gives a great example of this as she is immersed in a significant inquiry into Victorian Era wallpaper. Her essential question is “In what way was Victorian era wallpaper important and how did its styles develop?”
Jessie has deepened her inquiry by going back to the origins of Egyptian papermaking and use of wallpapers in China as early as 200BC. She has defined the Victorian Era and is finding information about different artists, and movements in wallpaper fashions. Jessie is also exploring how these fashions and styles are connected to and related to changes in art, clothing and society thoughout this time. To extend her project Jessie has found there will be opportunities to find out about paints, pigments, glues and poisons that were used in the wallpaper.
Jessie’s note taking is extending her skills with referencing and creating a bibliography and requires her to think critically about sources and the information that she finds. To communicate her research Jessie will write a paper and she is influenced by some favourite authors of historical texts such as Stephen Fry.
Part of her project is to design and make her own wallpaper print, which involves a deep understanding of symmetry, tessellation and will involve new skills in lino cutting or stencil making.
Thanks you Jessie for sharing your research as a great example of using Head Heart and Hand to explore your interests.

Town Hall
Our regular Town Hall gatherings are an important part of our school culture. They occur every Friday between 12:00-12:30 and most importantly, are always led by our students.
They focus on one of our school values (Aspiration is our term 3 focus) and also usually have an educational or community theme.
Recently our Town Hall aimed to raise awareness of the importance of mental health, with an Oodie or Hoodie dress up fundraiser raising over $100 for Speak up Stay Chatty. Another had a science week focus with various challenges as a means of celebrating Science Week

Leadership
Kristen and Jordan are 2 of our fantastic student leaders. Recently they were the key note speakers at the monthly meeting of the Launceston School for Seniors. They shared our school’s story, learning design and the key distinguishers associated with being a Big Picture School. The audience were amazed at the talents of both Jordan and Kristen.

MONA Excursion
On Monday 23rd August, the Long Welsh Town Name? advisory (10B) went on a trip to Mona in Hobart.
Most of us had never been before so we didn’t really know what to expect.
MONA has 3 stories of exhibitions with lots of paintings, sculptures and there are lots of little rooms with specific exhibits and ideas, as well as a waterfall that spells out words.
There were lots of pictures and exhibits that were surprising and some people found them somewhat challenging to experience.
There was a fat car, a couch that barked at you, and one room even had a sarcophagus in the middle with an x-ray to see the person inside. There was also a weird room with tubes set up to make poo. Each day the staff feed the machine and give it water to drink so it can create poo each afternoon.
Some of the exhibits got us talking about how they were made – like the room with black liquid, so it will be good to do some research about what the liquid was and why it why it was so reflective.
There is also a really loud tunnel. I was not sure what the purpose of this was, but I know some of the students really enjoyed it as it seemed to be a totally encompassing and sort of “out of body” experience.
Unfortunatley, we got caught in some heavy rain, but then got to eat lunch on the stage with the beanbags.

Deisgn & Technology
The workshop area of our school continues to be a very popular! Students with an interest in designing and construction have been enthusiastically working on their various individual projects- some using metal, some wood and others using a combination of various materials. We thank and are appreciate of the work that John Crick does in this space!

The Tasmanian Rock Challenge / Northern Heat
Year 12 student Phoebe Kelbassa is soon to hit the stage again as a soloist and member of the band, Now We’re Apart, at the Northern Heat of the Tasmanian Rock Challenge.
Phoebe will be playing two originals, in the acoustic section, called "The Rainbow" and "Happy".
"I think it’s really funny that the songs I am performing have these positive vibe names - it’s kind of ironic as they are quite conceptually heavy" Phoebe revealed.
The band, consisting of Phoebe Kelbassa, Luke Shirley, Justyne Westwood, Jarrod Smith and Elkie Kershaw, will also be playing two origionals in the band section, called "Make it Right" and "Can't Pretend to Love You". These songs are both fresh cuts that the band have been crafting in school and weekend rehersals.
Phoebe describes their sound as 'Melodic Pop-Punk, maybe!'.
Check out the band at the Tasmanian Rock Challenge at Launceston Convention Centre on Friday 3rd September!

Bob's Bikes For Sale!
- From as low as $20! -
Bob’s Bikes is an example of one of the authentic and interesting programs on offer at our school. Students have the opportunity to learn basic bike maintenance under the guidance of Bob Blackman. Bob is a fantastic role model for our young people and as a school we are grateful for the work he does.
We currently have a selection of bikes on display at the front of our school - all for sale for only $20.
It is also important to note that all money raised through the sale of our bikes is donated to charity!
COVID Quick Check-In TAS
To comply with Public Health Directions, our school is now set up with the COVID Check In TAS App. This app enables visitors to our school to register their visit using the self-check-in QR code and have their information directly stored with the Tasmanian Department of Health for contact tracing (if required).
Use of the app will help the Tasmanian contact tracing team quickly identify and assist anyone who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

Big Picture Education has 12 distinguishers.
In our newsletter we will share them.
Our seventh is...
7. Trust, Respect and Care
One of the striking things about Big Picture schools is the ease with which students interact with adults in both the school and the wider community. A culture of trust, respect and care is shared between students and adults, as well as among students themselves.
Informing School of Student Absences
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answer phone.
School Uniform
It is compulsory for students to wear their school uniform when attending school excursions, interviews, LTIs or if they are representing the school at events.
Uniforms can be purchased from the school office and are sold at cost price:
- Polo Shirts with school logo = $30
- School Hoody with school logo = $65
Any pre-worn uniform donations would be very much appreciated and are used in our emergency uniform/clothing pool.
Parking Inveresk Precinct
It is highly recommended that parents and visitors to the school DO NOT PARK along the nature strip in front of the school, slong the footpath or on the grass area beside Aurora Stadium.
The City Council have recently approached the school and have advised these areas are being patrolled and infringements are being issued.
Parents and visitors are advised to use the paid parking facilities at the Inveresk Car Park (next to Blue Cafe).
Communication & Useful Links
I would like to remind families of some useful links and apps that you may use to assist with receiving communication from our school.
- SMS Only - 0427 016 460 to report student absences, please send a text to our short message service
- Schoolzine App & Newsletter - Our newsletter is published at the end of every month through Schoolzine. Schoolzine is an app that allows you to communicate with the school, receive notices and newsletters
