Dear Families
Term 2 is a busy one for our staff and our young people! Reporting and assessment will form a key part of our work, however, our processes are formative and staff are working hard at providing regular feedback to students on a lesson by lesson and daily basis. Our grade 11 and 12 students will receive their second progress reports in a few weeks’ time. It is important that students carefully analyse both strengths and those areas identified as needing improvement. Grade 9 and 10 students will receive formal mid-year reports at the end of term. As always, if you would like to discuss anything regarding your child’s progress, please make an appointment with the office to see their advisory teacher.
Staffing
I am pleased to announce that both Tanya and Marianne have been successful in winning new leadership roles. The great news is that both will stay heavily involved in our school and continue to work with our students. Tanya will be working 0.5 at LBPS as our Assistant Principal and for the remainder of the time, she will coach and work to build the capacity of other Big Picture schools and staff across Tasmania. Marianne has one an AST leadership position in our school. She will also be our Support Teacher, assisting students across the school but importantly, her role will enable her to continue to assist those students in her existing Advisory Group.
Jenni Fraser will be our new Advisory Teacher. Jenni is very excited to join our team and has a strong passion for the Big Picture Learning Design.
Congratulations Jenni and Tanya :
Our Redevelopment
The upgrade to our reception area is in full swing! Builders and sub-contractors are busy preparing various parts of the project and it is certainly taking shape. Jennifer and Claire are very excited about this work and can’t wait to move into the new space later in the term. Some of our students have been involved in aspects of the work which is pleasing.
Learning Plan Meetings
Thank you to the parents who joined us on Monday and Wednesday for our term two learning plan meetings. These meetings are an important opportunity for our parents and families to engage more deeply with student learning. Often parents have less input into the learning of their children once they reach high school, but it is essential in our school that we keep open the communication between home and school at all times.
If parents have any suggestions about how we can improve our opportunities for families to engage with student learning, please contact me at school- we are very open to suggestions and ideas.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN assessments will begin during the second week of May and run for two weeks. Whilst these were put on hold during 2020 due to COVID-19, we are pleased to see their return this year. The assessments are now carried out online and are far more targeted to the level of the students completing them. The program is able to adjust the difficulty of the questions based on how many your child is getting correct. We found the engagement with the NAPLAN assessments to be much higher when students are completing them online.
Please encourage your child to do their very best and not be concerned about the test like nature of these assessments.
The data that comes back to our school as a result of the assessments is extremely useful in measuring how well we are supporting the learning of our students at Launceston Big Picture School.
Our Newsletter
Please remember to ensure that you are able to keep up with our exciting news and events, subscribe to:
If you are involved in a community organisation and would like to advertise in our newsletter, please contact our office. Where possible, we will be happy to assist.
Student Leaders
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our 2021 student leaders. Student voice and opinions are taken very seriously and I welcome the opportunity to regularly listen and meet with our young people. Recently our leaders and I had lunch at Hog’s Breath Café. It was a great opportunity to develop relationships and a sense of belonging.

2. LEARNING THROUGH INTERNSHIP
Well done to all students who have been proactive in organising their Internship pathway by contacting businesses, sending emails and making phone calls.
Term 2 is appearing to be a busy time for students leaving the building to learn.

Shadow Day - Woodend Equestrian Centre
On Wednesday, I went on a shadow day to Woodend Equestrian Centre. It was really cool to see how they did everything. When I arrived, Bert had been held up, so I helped the other stable hand, Bella, with the morning jobs. We went and fed all of the horses and then we cleaned out some of the horse paddocks. When we got back up to the stables, I helped muck out the stable. When Bert arrived, we went over the student induction book.
I helped Bert rake out the arena before Bella and I went out to get one of Bert's horses for her to ride. We were taking the horse up and I had to get on my tippy toes to brush the horse. It was 17.2 hands high. For the rest of the day, it was mostly cleaning, getting horses, and mucking out. I helped mix the horse feed and to give them their night-time feed. I had lots of fun and I would like to thank Bernadette for an awesome day!

Inormational Interview - Manu Bakery
Year 10 students Justin and Shannay visited Manu Bakery on Invermay to organise an Informational Interview for Justin who is interested in learning about baking.
Whilst in store we did purchase some delicious pastry treats!
Informatonal Interview - Information Technology
On the 29th of April, Alex, Mel (Our LTI Co-ordinator) and I went to 2 computer hardware stores around Launceston in search of informational interviews. Walking into a business has a far higher success rate that something like an email. By walking into business places, we create a personal connection to the employees and seem much more personable as opposed to a simple email. We walked into The Mac Shop and gave them a summary of our schools out-learning program. Afterward we requested that we arrange a short 15-20-minute interview with either a manager or business owner. The manager was out, so we handed them our LBPS contact card. They said they would have the manager follow up with Mel about an interview for a future date.
Next, we headed to Carbil Computers where we had a brief interaction that went about the same as before. The major difference this time was we received their manager’s details and we told to follow up with him via email to organise an interview. The man in the store front did forewarn us that they couldn’t accommodate work placements, but we were more than welcome to ask some questions.
When I first did LTI search in person it could feel quite awkward, but I quickly realised that you only get one chance to make a first impression. My confidence slowly grew from there and now I am capable of walking into businesses out of school hours and inquiring about opportunities.

Informational Interview - Archaeologist, Darren Watten
Darren Watton is an Archaeologist and runs a business called Southern Archaeology.
I asked if he had time to come in to talk to me and a couple students about archaeology terminology, types of archaeologist and how he got to where he is today.
He told us about all that and more! We also learnt about how operations and digs work. He spoke about his experience and artifacts he’s found.
With our meeting going for over an hour and questions going back and forth amongst Darren and our group, I would say it was a very successful and informative meeting.

9A's First EVER Town Hall
Last Friday saw 9A take to the Town Hall stage to run our first ever Town Hall. Our MC’s Connor Harvey and Charly Hindrum kept events running smoothly throughout, and even held Adrian to a time limit during his Principal’s address for the week!
Our Advisory Challenge for the week saw Cameron Thomas and Genevieve Marshall organise an ‘Anatomy Lesson’. Each advisory was required to race to their rooms and cut and paste images of the bodies organ systems onto a blank torso of the human body. Despite their best efforts, it quickly became clear that a number of these Advisories should not be allowed near an Operation game board let alone a live human being! Thankfully Marianne’s advisory managed to re-assemble their patient and, quite literally, walked away with the chocolates!
As Anzac Day was due to be held over the weekend, we found it important to recognise the sacrifices made by those who have fought for our country. With Charly providing a brief overview of the importance of this national event.
Although there are certainly areas for us to focus on improving for our next Town Hall in week 8, we are generally pleased with our efforts. Particularly with a short preparation period due to our reduced first week.

Short Story by Fenix Jaitong
The umbral fields were just as dark as always. Inky black sand swirled with the souls of the damned and the winds carried the extra unfortunate below further. Sam trudged across the dunes, peering over the horizon. Not a single living being in sight. Other than him, of course. The sand rumbled and Sam stumbled back as a huge being emerged from below. It had a wolfish face with six glowing eyes that illuminated the land around it, allowing Sam to see the trapped souls with clarity. It stood on four legs and towered over Sam. It had multiple tails sprouting from it’s back and a spiny ridge that ran down its spine. It opened its mouth to speak and Sam could clearly see lines of serrated teeth, each dripping with potent, black venom.
“You should not have come here, human,” the beast rumbled. The sand shook when it spoke and the souls hurried away from it, clearly afraid of being killed a second time.
“Why do you pass through my domain?” It continued.
Sam thought for a moment, then decided to be honest.
“I was on my way to the kitchen,” he said simply. He felt no fear from the towering beast before him. At this point, it was just part of his day.
“You ended up… on the twelfth plane of torment… on the way to the kitchen?” The beast asked, a note of amusement in its voice.
“I am not a clever man.”
The beast regarded him for a moment, then smiled. It was a beast-like smile and its body started shaking. A low rumble emitted from its throat, quietly at first then loud enough to drown out a thunderstorm.
“You amuse me, human,” the beast chuckled. “Very well. Leave this place quickly.”
The world spun around Sam and he sank into the sand.
As soon as his head was under the sand, he stumbled into his kitchen. It was an ordinary kitchen, albeit with some sticky notes on the fridge.
“Note to self,” Sam muttered, writing up another sticky note. “The demonic portal down the stairs is not the way to the kitchen.”
He stuck the note on the fridge.
Once he finished, his stomach growled and he made a sandwich.

My Project - History of Native American People
During the first term holidays I travelled to Canberra, where I met with seven Latin American Embassies (Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, Guatemala, Argentina, Ecuador and Cuba), the Embassy of Spain and a writer from Chile.
The reason that I met with these groups was because my personal interest project is focussed on exploring the histories of Native American people, with my focus being around the history of Indigenous Mexicans. It was a very interesting experience and I feel very privileged to have had a chance to meet with representatives from these embassies.

All Schools MTB Championships
Friday 6th May saw the 2021 All Schools MTB Championships held at the Trevallyn Nature Reserve, with over 300 students taking part from across the state. This is the first time that students from the Launceston Big Picture School have competed in the event, with our team members needing to be commended on their support of each other throughout the day, and the positive attitudes they displayed whilst competing.

Food & Cooking
Nutrition Solutions Tasmania
On Monday 26th of March, Stephen Hodgkinson and his team from Nutrition Solutions Tasmania came to school to work in the kitchen. Stephen was leading his team around how to do cooking demonstrations whilst our students, Jasper, Grace, Molly and Cameron assisted with the food preparation. It was excellent to see our students working along side adults in an authentic learning environment.
Clint, from C & B Creative, was taking photos of the food for Nutrition Solutions Tasmania's social media campaign with Justine assisting Clint. We had lots of different people come in to cook with us and photographers who took some pictures while we were cooking. Working with the people that came in, was very interesting and fun because I got to see their cooking styles and learn about what they do. I also learnt new recipes that I could make in the future for someone or myself.

Monday’s cooking class was a great experience being able to discover and learn with nutritionists. The cooking was awesome, and I learnt about a few of Steve’s techniques he used in the kitchen and how flavours and different textures mix-together as well as how to make healthier and simpler deserts. I got to speak with a few of the other cooks and learnt about nutrition and allergies and how to adapt the food in different ways to be able to then cater for the allergies.
I really enjoyed being able to work with adults and a chef, it inspires the students and It makes the class feel more professional and gives myself and others a better experience.

3. Personalisation: One Student At A Time
With the help of the advisory teacher and parents, each student develops a learning plan that explores their interests and passions, and identifies personal learning goals, authentic project work and wider curriculum requirements. This plan is reviewed and updated regularly.
Informing School of Student Absences
Your child’s Advisory Teacher records attendance daily using the DoE EduPoint system. Attendance is taken between 8:55am – 9:30am.
If your child is going to be absent, you will need to inform the school ASAP - otherwise the EduPoint system automatically marks the absence as ‘Unauthorised-Unexplained’ and this is not altered until communication is received from parents.
The preferred method of communication is to send the school an SMS 0427 016 460 (this is a short message service only, so you will not be able to ring the school on this number).
LBPS admin check the SMS service throughout the day and update any changes to student attendance.
You can of course ring the school direct on 6335 1500 and leave a voice message on the answerphone.
School Uniform
It is compulsory for students to wear their school uniform when attending school excursions, interviews, LTIs or if they are representing the school at events.
Uniforms can be purchased from the school office and are sold at cost price:
- Polo Shirts with school logo = $30 (sizes 6 up to 5XL)
- School Hoody with school logo = $65 (sizes XS up to 2XL)
Any pre-worn uniform donations would be very much appreciated and are used in our emergency uniform/clothing pool.
Parking Inveresk Precinct
It is highly recommended that parents and visitors to the school DO NOT PARK along the nature strip in front of the school, slong the footpath or on the grass area beside Aurora Stadium.
The City Council have recently approached the school and have advised these areas are being patrolled and infringements are being issued.
Parents and visitors are advised to use the paid parking facilities at the Inveresk Car Park (next to Blue Cafe).
